Escape room at home

An escape room at home is a puzzle game you play in your own rooms instead of a venue: a story, linked challenges and a goal. Below: how it works, the ways to play it and how to choose.

What it is, in one sentence

It's an escape room where the place you have to get out of, and search, is your own home. In paid venues you walk into a themed room; at home the puzzles use the doors, the bathroom mirror, the kitchen drawers, the beam of a torch. You play in the evening, without going anywhere, with whoever you like.

How it works

  1. A story opens the game. With Escape Your House it's a case file from the Archive of Houses: a house where «something stayed behind».
  2. The puzzles are linked. The answer to one leads to the next: a place in the house, a word, a number.
  3. Someone checks the answers. In the app it's the voice on the phone; in the kits it's the Keeper, whoever organises; in the book it's the Register of keys.
  4. The hints come in steps. First a clue, then a clearer one, then the solution explained: nobody stays stuck.

FAQ

What is an escape room at home?

It's a puzzle game you play in your own home instead of a venue: a story, a series of linked challenges and a goal to reach within a time limit. With Escape Your House the puzzles use the real rooms and objects of the house: doors, mirrors, drawers, your phone's torch.

How do you make an escape room at home?

In three ways: with the app, which guides the game with a voice on the phone and needs no preparation; with a printable kit, where the organiser sets up the house in about twenty minutes (estimate, not including printing); or by inventing it from scratch with the DIY kit and the guide.

Do you need anything special to play?

No. With the app, all you need is your phone. With the kits you need a printer, scissors, sticky tape and things every home has; each kit lists what you need and suggests an alternative for anything you might not have.

How long does an escape room at home last?

The app's prologue lasts nine minutes. The kits range from 45 minutes to an hour; the murder mystery dinner fills a dinner of about two and a half hours. These are estimates: every group has its own pace.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, with the right product: the kit «Who stole the candles?» is designed for ages 8-12 with an adult acting as the Keeper; the app's prologue can be played from age 8. The other kits state the recommended age.

How much does it cost?

The four printable kits and the DIY kit are free, in exchange for an email address. The app's prologue is free. The app's six case files are on the way; the book comes out in November 2026.

Can you play on your own?

Yes: the app and the book can also be played solo. The printable kits are designed for groups, except «The midnight note», which is for two people.

Is it safe?

The rules apply to every game: never real flames, never climb on chairs or ladders, never water near sockets, never leave the house at night.
