ESCAPE YOUR HOUSE Save my spot

10 tricks expert players use

They work in any escape room. In the one inside your home they count double: you already know the room. Or you think you do.

  1. Split up to search, regroup to decide

Time disappears when five people stare at the same drawer. One area each, then everyone back to the table.

  2. Say out loud everything you find

Even what looks useless. The clue in your hand often completes the one in someone else's.

  3. Keep a pile of used items

Something that has already opened a lock rarely matters again. Put it aside and the field narrows.

  4. Count everything

Books on the shelf, pictures on the walls, steps, chimes. Plenty of codes are born from a count.

  5. Read it twice

The second pass is when you spot the odd word, the date out of place, the bold letter. That's almost always it.

  6. Never force anything

If it takes force, you're on the wrong track. A good puzzle opens with an idea, not with your wrist.

  7. Let the locks talk

Four digits, five letters, a string of arrows: the shape of the lock already tells you what kind of answer to look for.

  8. One person keeps the notebook

Numbers found, combinations tried, open leads. Whoever writes it down saves the team from solving the same thing twice.

  9. Ask for a hint before you stall

Five minutes standing still cost more than one clue. A hint isn't a defeat; getting stuck is.

  10. Look where you never look

Under, behind, on top, inside, on the back of every sheet. Designers hide things where the eye doesn't go on its own.
